“Arbutin blocks the key enzyme that produces pigment or melanin in the skin and is also a potent antioxidant, therefore helping to even out skin tone and lighten hyperpigmentation and dark spots,” says the consultant dermatologist Dr Sharon Wong. And unlike many retinoids and acids, it doesn’t increase sun sensitivity.

How to use it
Wong advises applying arbutin twice a day as a leave-on product, like you would use a serum or moisturiser. It can be used for all skin types; however she recommends avoiding this if youare pregnant.

Top tip
“Don’t keep these products on your bathroom windowsill as exposure to heat can degrade the quality of the product,” she says.
